WHAT TO SAY/SCRIPT (you can leave this on a voicemail):
Hi, my name is [XXX]. I’m a constituent of [REPRESENTATIVE/SENATOR NAME] and I’m calling to express my concern about a new bill I saw come through: [House Bill 1895 OR Senate Bill 1971], the bill that would ban out of state travel for minors seeking an abortion.
I’m calling to urge [REP / SEN] to vote NO on this bill. I think this bill sets a dangerous precedent of criminalizing trusted adults helping the young people in their lives. It has extreme consequences attached like up to 15 years in prison, or up to a $10,000 fine, for anyone who provides a young pregnant person with assistance. This bill is blatant fear-mongering meant to make people too scared to offer support to a young person in need and to make pregnant people too scared to seek help from other trusted adults.
Additionally, this bill is illegal. It is illegal to ban interstate travel for any reason, and Tennessee lawmakers do not have the authority to do so. That means that, if it gets passed, this bill will certainly go to the courts and cost Tennessee taxpayers millions of dollars.
I think this bill is irresponsible and dangerous, and would end up putting vulnerable Tennessee youth at risk. Will you please express to [REP / SEN] that I am urging [him/her/them/etc] NOT to support this bill and please vote NO when they have the opportunity to do so.
Thank you so much for your time. Have a great day! [END].
